Second Grade News from Todd
In PE we have worked on listening, safety, and good sportsmanship. We have practiced tagging safely, moving quickly without bumping into others, various balances, agility movements and loco-motor movements. Additionally, we have played various recreation and cooperative games in which working together, following the rules of the game and being honest are emphasized. We will continue to work on listening, safety and good sportsmanship while we begin our soccer unit. For soccer we will work on dribbling, passing, shooting, and game strategies.

How Did I Get My Name? (Room 9)
In Room 9 we read the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. As we discussed the book, we started making personal connections to the book about our own names. We also made a connection with our summer reading book Gooney Bird Greene and how Gooney Bird got her name. We thought it would be fun to learn the story of our own names. Many of the students in Room 9 don't know how they got their name. Talk with your child about how and why you decided to give your child his or her name. Does the name have a special meaning? We will be recording our stories this week in school!

Busy Monday in Room 3
The students came back from the weekend rested and ready to start working! They wrote their first Weekend Story of the year and shared lots of details with the class. We also started class jobs today, which will be changed on a weekly basis. Some of the jobs are Date Keeper, Number Cruncher, and Personal Assistant. I began a class read-aloud with the book Sideways Stories from Wayside School. I bet the students are happy not to have a teacher like Mrs. Gorf!

A Super First Week of Second Grade!
We started some daily routines such as Morning Meeting, reading the morning message, and answering Geography questions of the day.
In math we worked on developing strategies by playing a few strategy based games. The Balance game was a favorite (see the video below)! We also practiced doing "math drawings" to represent numbers.
After sharing the story How I Spent My Summer Vacation?, by Mark Teague, the students started planning and writing their own Summer stories.
