Buyers and Sellers in Our Community

This week our social studies lessons revolved around rural, suburban, and urban communities. We took the lesson one step further by discussing who lives within these communities. The students selected their own community contributors, such as scientists, farmers, hair dressers, FBI agents, etc. This led to figuring out whether or not their contributor was a buyer and/or seller. MM's dad came in to share with the class on how the Trader Joe's company is a buyer and seller. The students were able to make a connection between big businesses and the Second Grade School Store. They also learned that the products sold in a business have to start somewhere (rural), travel to stores (suburban), and then get sold to consumers (urban).

Brain Awareness Week

During Brain Awareness Week, SH's grandmother came in to teach the students about their brains! The students were engaged by learning different facts and fascinating functions.

The Leprechaun Bologna Set-Up (aka traps)

Students set up their leprechaun bolognas (traps) for St. Patrick's Day in hopes of catching Elliam. With a lot of creativity, candy, and gold nobody was successful in catching the little trickster; however, Elliam did leave behind some candy of her own for the students to enjoy!

Learning About Communities

This week in social studies the students learned about three different types of communities: rural, suburban, and urban. They learned the characteristics of each and then recreated these communities using markers, paper, and their own creativity! Take a look at some of the communities and buildings they made.

Making Topographic Maps

We spent the last couple of weeks discussing different types of maps. This week the students had the opportunity to create their own topographic map of North America using play dough. When it was dry, they labeled their maps- mountains, bodies of water, and the North American countries.

Read Across America

Students celebrated Read Across America/Dr. Seuss's birthday wearing PJ's and enjoying pancakes. With friends and family, they read for 2012 seconds on the Kelly Family Field.

100th Day of School

Students spent the 100th day of school bringing in 100 items to share with their peers. They were instructed to divide their items into groups. They had to figure out how many items would fit into equal groups that would create a multiplication equation using the same number twice (10x10 or 10 groups of 10).
